The law, the first in the world concerning equal pay, was approved in March 2017, before International Women Day and was effective starting the first Monday of 2019. Iceland is well known for its progress reached in terms of equal opportunities in different fields such as health, access to education and responsability of parenthood, which made it the most feminist and pro-gender equality country on the planet. The legislation- supported by both center-right coalition government and the opposition- focused on enforcing equal pay, makes mandatory for any public or private company employing more than 25 people to pay equal wages for work of equal value and requires companies to prove that through an equal pay certification using the "Equal Pay Standard", an equal pay management system specifically conceived for the employers to prevent salary discrimination.
